Chinese Embassy in Santiago

Ambasciata de China em Santiago, Chile

Panoramica

The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Santiago manages one of China's most important bilateral relationships in Latin America. Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China (1970) and the first to sign a free trade agreement with China (2005). China is Chile's largest trading partner — copper accounts for the overwhelming majority of Chilean exports to China, making the relationship structurally vital for both countries. Chile's lithium reserves (part of the South American 'Lithium Triangle') are a growing focus of Chinese investment. The embassy provides consular services from its Providencia location; the consular section is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings only.

Servizi Visto

The consular section processes visa applications for Chilean citizens travelling to China. Hours: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 09:30–12:30 (arrivals after 12:15 are not served). Requirements vary by visa type — tourist (L), business (M), work (Z), study (X), transit (G).

Servizi Consolari

Passport renewal, travel documents, notarial services, document legalisation and emergency assistance for Chinese nationals in Chile. The embassy phone also serves as an emergency line outside office hours for Chinese citizens.

Supporto Commerciale ed Esportazione

Chile is China's largest copper supplier and one of its most important sources of agricultural products — fresh fruit (cherries, blueberries, grapes, avocados), wine, salmon and forestry products are the main non-mineral exports. The China-Chile Free Trade Agreement (2005, upgraded 2019) provides preferential access. The embassy supports bilateral trade promotion and Chinese investment in Chilean mining, energy and infrastructure.

Programmi Culturali ed Educativi

The embassy supports the Confucius Institute network in Chile and Chinese language education at Chilean universities. Cultural exchange includes film screenings, art exhibitions, Spring Festival celebrations and academic scholarship programmes.
